According to Hindu Religious Beliefs, In Treta Yug, Goddess Sita is observed as the 7th Avtaar of Goddess Laxmi. Goddess Sita was the princess of Mithila, the king of Raja Janak. One day, King Janaka was plowing the field to perform a Yajna he found an infant girl in the Golden box inside the field. A plowed land is called Sit in the Sanskrit language hence King Janaka named the child girl Sita as she was born as a spiritual daughter of the earth (Bhumi). Therefore, this day is famous for Sita Navami. In addition to this, she was an adoptive daughter of King Janak and Queen Sunayana of Mithila, Bihar. Hence this day is also known as Janaki Navami. Her name Janaki is related to her father Janak. She is a symbol of purity and sincerity. Mata Sita was also gone for banish (vanvaas) up to 14 years with her husband Lord Ram. She came back after 14 years and became the Queen of Ayodhya.

Significance of Sita Navami in India and Nepal

Sita Navami celebration is equally important as Ram Navami in all Hindu Festivals. The significance of festival expresses the birth remembrance of Goddess Sita although she is respected as the essence of sacrifice, purity, patience, courage and dedication. She is believed as avatar of Goddess Laxmi for the establishment of purity and sacrifice in all women’s heart. This day is also known as Sita Jayanti or Janaki Jayanti.

The glory of this festival in cities of India in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Nepal with some more places. Most of the Hindu devotees celebrate with great dedication and enthusiasm. They gather into temples to celebrate their Goddess Sita’s birth anniversary around April and May every year.

Auspicious Date and Time, Puja Subh Muhurat for Sita Navami

According to the Hindu Panchang, Sita Navami falls in the Shukla Paksha of the Vaishakh month on Navami Tithi. It is also believed that Goddess Sita was born on Tuesday in Pushya Nakshatra. As per Hindu calendar, Sita Jayanti exactly comes one month after Rama Navami. The exact date of Sita Navami may vary from year to year.

This year in 2021, the festival will be celebrated in India on Friday, May 21.

Traditional Value of Sita Navami

Mata Sita is a holy divinity who is always recognized for her honesty, sacrifice and dedication towards her husband, Lord Rama and that’s why as per the Ramayan epic, she always holds the position of an ideal wife.

On this auspicious day, married women observe fast for their happy married life. They perform puja and pray for their husband’s long life, progress, victory and well being as Mata Sita did for Lord Ram when Lanka’s King Ravana kidnapped her with bad intension and kept her in Ashok Vatika.

This is a belief that the women who keep fasts on Sita Navami and pray with Mata Sita, they will be blessed with happily and successful married life.

Best Puja Vidhi of Sita Navami

According to Hindu mythology and the greatest Sanskrit epic Ramayana, Mata Sita is believed to be the greatest Hindu goddess and has a special place in the hearts of devotees especially women all over the world.

They observe a strict fast from early morning to throughout the day without taking food and water. They prepare a mandap decorated with flowers and garlands and place idols of Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, and Lakshman together.

Then the ritual of puja of all deities are performed along with Goddess Earth as Mata Sita is found from the Earth.

After the puja, women devotees, offer satvik sweets, fruits, barley, rice, etc to the deities and at the end perform aarti and distribute Prasad to all.

At several temples of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita, devotees sing and dance by chanting ‘Jai Siya Ram’ through the way.

A great celebration is also conducted with different rituals like Bhajan- Kirtans, Recitals of epic Ramayana, Maha Aarti and many more.

At this time, devotees pray for peace, prosperity and success with blessings from Lord Rama and Goddess Sita.
